Installation is the number that moves
A built-in electric oven needs a competent electrician; a gas one legally needs a Gas Safe registered fitter. Neither is included in the price, both differ substantially between suppliers, and a gas fitting is not optional or something to improvise.
Add fitting, removal of the old appliance and any making good to every quote. On a mid-priced oven those together frequently exceed the difference between the cheapest and dearest retailer.
Built-in, built-under and freestanding
These are three different products with three different installation requirements, and they are listed together. A freestanding cooker slots into a gap and plugs in; a built-in oven goes into a housing unit and is wired in. Establish which your kitchen takes before comparing a single price.
What actually drives the price
- Single or double. A double oven is a genuinely different unit, not a tier.
- Pyrolytic cleaning, a real premium that removes the worst job in the kitchen.
- Fuel. Gas, electric or dual fuel, which decides the fitting cost as much as the appliance cost.
- Energy rating, which over a decade outweighs most price differences here.

- Measure the aperture precisely, including depth.
- Establish built-in, built-under or freestanding.
- Get a fitting quote before comparing appliance prices.
- Confirm gas work will be done by a Gas Safe engineer.
- Add removal and disposal of the old oven.
