Type decides the real cost

Vented, condenser and heat pump dryers differ enormously in running cost. Heat pump models cost the most to buy and substantially the least to run; vented models are the reverse. Over the life of the machine the gap in electricity frequently exceeds the gap in purchase price.

So comparing a cheap vented dryer against an expensive heat pump one on price alone is comparing the wrong number. If you dry more than a couple of loads a week, the expensive machine is often the cheaper one.

Venting is a building constraint, not a preference

A vented dryer needs a route outside. If your utility space has no external wall or window, the decision is made for you regardless of price — which is worth establishing before you spend any time comparing.

What actually drives the price

Type. Heat pump, condenser or vented, in descending order of purchase price and ascending order of running cost.
Capacity, which should match your washing machine rather than exceed it.
Sensor drying. Stops when the load is dry rather than when a timer ends. Saves electricity and clothes.
Installation and old-machine removal, charged separately and varying widely between retailers.

Before you buy

Establish whether venting is even possible in your space.
Decide the type based on how much you will actually use it.
Match the capacity to your washing machine.
Add delivery, installation and removal to every quote.
Check the energy rating — over a decade it outweighs most price differences here.
