Compare the total, not the appliance

Large appliances are the clearest case where the headline price is the wrong comparison. Getting a washing machine into a house involves delivery to the room you want it in, connecting it, and taking away the old one — and each of those is charged differently by different retailers, or included by some and not others.

A machine that looks cheaper on the product page can easily end up costing more once it is plumbed in and the old one has gone. Compare the number at the end of the checkout.

Model suffixes

As with televisions, retailers frequently stock variants of the same appliance with a slightly different model code. The differences are typically small — a programme, a finish, a display — but they are enough that the identical code may not exist elsewhere. Search the model without its suffix to find the siblings.

What actually drives the price

Spin speed and capacity, which are the two specifications that move price most and are easy to over-buy.
Energy rating. A more efficient machine costs more up front and less to run, so the honest comparison is over the life of the machine rather than on the day.
Brand tier within the same manufacturer — several groups own multiple brands built on shared platforms at different price points.
Clearance and graded stock. Appliances with cosmetic damage are sold at a real discount, and a mark on a side panel is invisible once it is installed under a counter.

Extended warranties

These are offered hard at the point of sale on appliances, and they are where a lot of the margin lives. Before buying one, note that goods sold in the UK come with statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act — goods must be of satisfactory quality and last a reasonable time — and that a claim against the retailer is possible for a period well beyond the first year. Whether an extended warranty adds anything depends on what it covers over and above that.
