Cheapest place to buy a lawn mower in the UK
Buy a mower in April and you are paying the April price.
Seasonality here is extreme
Few categories move with the calendar as hard as garden machinery. Prices climb from early spring, hold through summer, and fall sharply in autumn as retailers clear stock they do not want to store over winter.
The same mower can differ by a large margin between April and October. If the grass can wait, waiting is the single biggest saving available.
Cordless mowers hide the battery cost
As with power tools, cordless mowers are sold both as bare units and with batteries, at prices that are not comparable. Mower batteries are large and expensive, so the gap is bigger here than on a drill.
If the mower shares a platform with tools you own, the bare unit is excellent value. If not, budget for the battery as part of the purchase.
What actually drives the price
- Power source. Corded electric, cordless, or petrol, in ascending order of price and capability.
- Cutting width, which decides how long the lawn takes and should be matched to its size rather than maximised.
- Battery included or not, and its capacity.
- Self-propelled versus push, a large price difference and the thing most worth having on any slope.
Before you buy
- Match the cutting width to the lawn, not to the budget.
- Establish whether the battery is included.
- Decide corded, cordless or petrol based on the lawn size and the distance to a socket.
- Compare in autumn if you possibly can.
- Check B&Q, Wickes and Argos as well as the general retailers.
