Several e-readers are sold in two otherwise identical versions: one showing sponsored screens on the lock screen, and one without, at a higher price. The listings look nearly the same and the difference is easy to miss.
Generations stay on sale a long time
E-readers update slowly and older generations remain available for years at reducing prices. Since the naming barely changes, it is easy to buy a model two generations old without noticing — sometimes that is the right call, but it should be a decision rather than an accident.
What actually drives the price

- Warm lighting and auto-brightness, genuinely pleasant and a real premium.
- Waterproofing, which decides whether it can go in the bath.
